Blueberry Bonanza - TriBeCa

This unique triangular design layout, set in the shadow of some of the world’s tallest buildings, offers many creative opportunities and challenges. One main goal beyond expanded living space, is to also provide food for this private residence.

Ross Martin Design works closely with this young family to maximize limited space and sun by growing vertically. Fences thrust upward becoming living walls bearing abundant fruits and vegetables, mimicking vegetatively the towering World Trade buildings. Blueberry shrubs make up the midstory with cranberry and strawberry spilling out below. While raspberry, blackberry, and grapes climb above. A separate terrace hosts a bountiful vegetable garden. All of it is framed by raucous native and pollinator perennials and shrubs.

Another key aspect of this special garden tailored to the family’s distinct needs and desires is that it is participatory. RMD helped educate them creating a narrative manual on how to nurture and steward their productive and attractive habitat ensuring they play an active critical role in the natural urban fabric. They even compost!
